Most primary suite briefs start with what the room should contain: a larger bathroom, a walk-in closet, perhaps a sitting area. Those are outcomes rather than decisions, and they can be arranged in a dozen ways that feel completely different to live in.
The question that shapes the plan is duller and far more useful. Do the two people using it keep the same hours? Everything from door positions to lighting circuits to where the closet goes follows from the answer, and it is almost never asked.
Three functions with conflicting requirements
A primary suite joins sleeping, washing and dressing, and they want opposite conditions.
Sleeping wants darkness, quiet, cool still air and no reflection. Washing wants bright even light, warmth, moisture and ventilation that runs. Dressing wants light that shows colour accurately, which is different again from either, and enough space to see yourself properly.
Joining them into one suite is convenient and it creates every problem that follows: moisture reaching a room full of textiles, light from one function waking someone in another, a fan running while somebody is asleep, and a bright room adjacent to a dark one.
None of that is a reason not to have a suite. It is the reason the thresholds between the three matter more than the finishes inside them, and those thresholds are decided in the plan rather than at the end.

The two schedules question
The single most useful thing to establish before drawing anything.
Where two people wake and sleep at roughly the same time, the suite can be open and simple. Where one rises at five and the other at eight, or one reads late, the plan has to do real work: a closet that can be used without turning on a light in the bedroom, a bathroom door that is not beside the headboard, lighting circuits that can be operated independently, and a route in and out that does not cross the bed.
This is the difference between a suite that works and one where somebody is quietly getting dressed in the hallway for a decade. It costs nothing to design for at the plan stage and is close to impossible to retrofit.
It is worth being honest here rather than aspirational. The schedules people actually keep are the ones the room has to serve.
How each element changes with two schedules

The right hand column is not more expensive. It is a set of decisions that have to be made in the plan rather than added later.
Sound is the regret people report
More than layout, more than storage and far more than finish.
The complaints are consistent. A bathroom door directly beside the bed. An extractor that is loud enough to wake somebody. A lavatory sharing a wall with the headboard. Pipework in a stud wall that announces every use. A closet door on a rail that rumbles.
All of these are easy to avoid at the framing stage and disruptive afterwards. Insulation in the stud walls between the bathroom and the bedroom, a solid core door rather than hollow, pipe runs kept out of the headboard wall, a fan chosen for its noise rating and ducted so the unit is not directly overhead, and soft close on everything.
It is worth walking the plan and asking, for each fixture, whether it will be used while somebody is asleep on the other side of that wall. Where the answer is yes, that wall needs attention.
Blackout is about the edges
The most common disappointment with an otherwise good bedroom.
People specify blackout lining and are surprised the room is not dark. The fabric was never the problem. Light comes in at the sides of the curtain, over the top of the track, and through the gap between two panels, and a lined curtain hung on a pole in front of a window does nothing about any of it.
Genuine darkness needs the treatment to seal: a track returned to the wall or set inside a recess with a pelmet above, panels wide enough to overlap generously, and where the room faces a street light or an early sun, a blind fitted tight to the reveal underneath the curtains.
This matters more in a room where one person sleeps later, and it is the sort of thing that is straightforward to specify at the start and awkward to correct once the hardware is up.
Design the closet from an inventory
Rather than from the space available, which is how most of them are laid out.
The number that matters is hanging length: how many linear feet of long hanging, short hanging, shelving and drawers the two people actually need. Measure what exists now and add a margin. Almost every closet that disappoints was planned by dividing the available area rather than by counting what has to go in it.
Long hanging is the constraint most often underestimated, particularly for coats and dresses, and double hanging only works where the ceiling height genuinely allows both rails to be reached. Shoes take far more shelf than people allow. Folded knitwear needs drawers or it ends up in stacks that collapse.
Light matters here more than in most rooms because it is where colour is judged. A single fitting in the middle of the ceiling leaves you looking at your own shadow, and lighting close to the hanging rails is what makes a closet usable rather than merely large.
The night route
A small thing that decides whether a suite feels considered.
Every primary suite has a path used in the dark, from one side of the bed to the bathroom. It is worth drawing it. Does it pass the other person’s head. Is there a door swing in the way. Is there a threshold or a rug edge on it.
Lighting that route without waking anybody is the detail worth solving: a low level fitting near the floor, a dimmed circuit at its lowest setting, or lighting inside the bathroom set to come up gently rather than at full output. What does not work is the main bathroom light on a single switch, which is what most suites have.
The same thought applies to the return journey, when the eyes have adjusted and any bright surface reads as glare.

Illinois conditions specifically
Four things that shape a suite here more than the plan suggests.
Exterior walls are cold for a long stretch of the year, and a headboard against a poorly insulated one is noticeably uncomfortable. Where the bed has to sit on an outside wall, insulation and a solid headboard both help.
A suite over an unheated garage is a recurring problem in the western suburbs. The floor is cold, the room never settles, and it is worth addressing in the build rather than with a rug.
Heat underfoot in the ensuite earns its place here in a way it does not everywhere, both for comfort and for drying the floor between uses.
And winter light is low and grey for months, which affects both paint choice and the light you dress by. Colours should be judged in the room in February conditions rather than in a showroom, and the closet lighting should render colour properly, because for half the year it is doing the job daylight cannot.
Design it for the people in it
Rather than for a buyer who does not exist yet.
A great deal of primary suite advice is really resale advice: double vanities regardless of whether two people ever use them together, a soaking tub that nobody will fill, a sitting area in a room where nobody sits. Those decisions consume space that a household would have used differently.
If a bath is genuinely used, it is worth the room it takes. If it is not, that area makes a better shower or a larger closet, and the house will not suffer for it. If one person needs a proper place to read at midnight, that is a real requirement and worth planning for.
